The Leto Clinic

Individualised postnatal care

Dr Leah Deutsch is a NHS Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. The Leto Clinic was created in response to a clear need for a more individualised, trauma informed approach to caring for women and birthing people after birth.

Leah is passionate about providing post natal care  tailored to individual need, something often more difficult to access in a time and resource poor public system.

Her years of professional practice and her own personal experience as a parent have consolidated this drive and passion. Her mission is to provide a better service for new mothers, in what is often a challenging period,  helping women and birthing people feel supported and heard.

Leah is also qualified advanced yoga teacher, specialising in yoga for women’s health and has completed several specialist trainings in birth trauma enabling her provide a more rounded and holistic approach in the care she offers.

Having a child, whether it’s your first or sixth, is most likely one of the most emotionally, physically and mentally challenging things you will ever go through but also monumentally life changing in the most incredible way. Having the right people to support you as you embark on this journey can shift your whole experience.

At the Leto Clinic, we strive to ensure you leave feeling confident in your physical and emotional well-being, supporting your journey in to motherhood.

As an experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist, my aim is to ensure your postnatal care is supportive and comprehensive. Your 50-minute postnatal review will provide a physical assessment, whilst recognising your birth may have been traumatic and you may need more time to discuss certain aspects. Ultimately it aims to be  individualised to your needs, but can include the following:

Physical

  • General physical examination including blood pressure check, abdominal and pelvic examination
  • Assessment for abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
  • Wound review and management (if relevant)
  • Exploration of any incontinence or pelvic floor concerns and referral to women’s health physiotherapist if required.
  • Bloods or microbiology samples if required (at an additional cost)

Psychological

  • Trauma informed review of your pregnancy and birth experience with a focus of any complications.
  • Discussion around current mental health state.
  • Exploration of your emotional wellbeing.
  • Direct referral where needed, to access evidence based therapy for birth trauma.

Wellbeing

  • Advice around returning to exercise
  • Contraceptive advice service (prescription for hormonal contraception and coil insertion also offered)
  • Discussion relating to any feeding concerns and referral to a lactation consultant if required.

accessible healthcare

We recognise that the cost of a private consultation (especially in today’s financial climate) can make such a service prohibitive. If you feel you might benefit from this service but it’s not within your current budget, please get in contact. We offer one ‘pay what you can’ appointment each week. You don’t have to explain your circumstances, just reach out and we’ll aim to make it work.

The Leto Clinic holds appointments in the comfortable custom designed rooms at Dr Sharon Silberstein's Clinic in Hampstead Garden Suburbs. The clinic is a hub with many specialist services for new parents.

What is the Leto Clinic?

The Leto Clinic is a postnatal clinic set up by obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Leah Deutsch as a result of hearing the stories of so many women and ultimately motivated by her own experience. The aim, to address a lack of adequate medical care following birth. Postnatal care within the NHS is often described as the 'Cinderella Service' ie a really under resourced area. This clinic aims to bridge that gap and provide women and birthing people with a comprehensive review up to a year following birth and offers a more individualised and holistic approach to care than currently exists.

The Leto Clinic is named after the Female Titan, Leto, from Greek mythology. She was the mother to Apollo and Aretmis and is considered the Goddess of motherhood and protectress of the young.

When can I attend this clinic?

We welcome any new mother to this clinic from birth up until 1 year postpartum. You may want to wait for a few weeks to allow any wounds to begin to heal and have a moment to process the fact that you are a new parent, but we are happy to see you at any point during your parenting journey.

Do I need to be a brand new mum to see you?

In short, no. Initially these appointments were restricted to the first year following birth, but we have had many enquiries from women several years in to their parenting journey. We recognise that the journey of physical and emotional recovery following birth is dynamic and your needs may change and that you often aren't able to really seek help for your specific needs until the dust has settled a bit. We are happy to target appointments to these changing requirements at any point post birth.

Do you offer reduced rates?

The driving force of this clinic is to make it available to as many as possible. We don't want cost to be the thing preventing you from getting that help, which is why we have introduced one 'pay what you can' appointment each week. Please reach out if you this is you.

What do I need to bring?

If you have a discharge letter from your hospital, it would be helpful to bring this along as well as a list of any medications that you take regularly. Please ensure that you shower prior to the appointment.

Can my partner come?

This appointment is primarily designed to support the physical and emotional needs of the birthing person. Your partner is of course welcome to come along if you feel this would be helpful to you, but please note the focus will be on your healthcare journey.

Will you contact my GP?

After booking your appointment, you will be sent a pre-appointment questionnaire. Within this form you can consent or decline to Dr Deutsch contacting your GP. The purpose of this would be to share any healthcare information relevant to your longterm care. Information is shared in a confidential way directly with your practice and to no other third parties without your explicit consent. This is completely optional and is an opt in decision.

What will be covered during my appointment?

The aim of the clinic is to provide a holistic and individualised review of your health. This will include a discussion around your birth, a comprehensive physical review and can then be focussed towards your own concerns (please see what is covered above).

Will I have any follow up?

Your clinic appointment is 50 minutes, which will allow time to perform a thorough postnatal review. There may be more issues you wish to explore and follow up appointments can be booked if you feel you may benefit from this.

Will there be a chaparone?

Yes, our lovely receptionist is DBS checked and will act as a chaparone.

Dr Deutsch reserves the right to charge the full fee in cases of non-attendance to booked appointments. Cancellations mean that other families who could have had this slot have to wait longer.  If you cancel your appointment the following charges will apply:

  • Within 24 hours of the booked time, no refunds will be given and if you haven’t already paid you will be invoiced the full cost of the consultation, payable within 7 days.
  • Within 48 hours of your appointment time, a £20 admin charge will be charged, and the remaining balance refunded to you.
  • Up to 48 hours before your appointment time, a £10 admin charge will be charged, and the remaining balance refunded to you.
